May 2012 newsletter

MMKO April 2, 2012

Good morning everyone! I hope you had an exciting week. It seems like there is business both listings and buyers like the buds on the Bradford Pear Trees in the spring. They are everywhere right now.
I made a trip this week to see our newly expanded Midwest City office this week and basically found out we may have to expand there again shortly. I left the office thinking about what is really doing on there. What I saw was a group of Realtors who have totally embraced the philosophy of “Controlling Their Own Destiny”. There comes an energy that is generated when you find a group of people who totally understand the idea of “Controlling Their Own Destiny” and you find it in that office. I am not saying we do not have energy in our other offices but I am saying there is a difference in that energy. When you are “Controlling Your Own Destiny” #1 You are focused and driven, #2 You feed off the en-ergy of others and #3 You will not be discouraged. You can see the whole office working very well with each other as a team. You also see teams growing and you will see individuals selling at a higher rate. In the last 60 days we also opened a First Mortgage office in the new wing of the office. We have a dynamic young lady by the name of Susan Morgan who is the fulltime Loan Originator now in our Midwest City office. Susan too is growing her business through our business.
I also noticed there was a fairly high percentage of their Realtors in the office. I have always felt that if a Realtor really wants to succeed they need the energy of others they can derive by being in the office and feeding off the energy that comes from being around people who are making their calls and getting Real Estate sold. Having a high percentage of Realtors in the office also charges up those who normally come into the office. It usually makes the consistent Real-tors produce at even a higher rate as they see others putting properties under contract.
As I have always said “if you are not controlling your own destiny then somebody else will be controlling yours.” Someone else will be picking up that office call, someone else will be following up and nailing down that buyer, some-one else will be doing the mailers that get the listings, someone else will be increasing their market share. In effect someone else is controlling your destiny when you do not. I had some one tell me some time back that they knew that I worked a lot of hours. Well when I had a job with a boss for another company they made me put in a lot of hours over there too. The difference is that now I work for myself just like you do at my job. I treat my career just like a job. I make more money now working for myself at my job than I did working for someone else and putting in those hours. I get paid at a much higher per hour rate now than when I worked for someone else as well. I also enjoy my time off and ac-tually may be gone more than you might think I just don’t have to tell anyone. I don’t have to ask off to go fishing or to go to Hot Springs Arkansas. By the way if you have ever been to one of those old bath houses in Hot Springs…it is quite an experience. Call or email me and I will share details not meant for the MMKO. Lake Hamilton is beautiful and if you ever want a quiet get away try the Hamilton House. Fabulous! Sorry I got a little side tracked here.
There is a book titled “Control Your Destiny or Someone Else Will” which was written by Noel M. Tichy and Stratford Sherman which I have read and would love for you to read as well. My wife bought me a Kindle for Christmas and I think I am on like book 12 since I received it. You might ask when does Dan have time to read? Well with a Kindle I can read at an open house, I can read during an inspection or while waiting on the fish to bite at the lake, so there.
The bottom line is “This week commit to spending a certain amount of time in the office. Then work your plan of mak-ing phone calls, emails or follow-ups. You will be surprised when you take control of your destiny what you will ac-complish.
Have a great week everyone. You are the best Realtors in Oklahoma! Dan

MMKO March 19 2012

Good morning everyone. I hope all of you have had a busy week. Our congratulations go out to all of the award winners from Saturday night. See tomorrows blog post for the complete list. You are all winners and we are thankful for each one of you.
This morning let’s talk about being sweaty and being stubborn. The more I watch our great Thunder Team the more excited they get me through their hard work and perseverance. When you are the top dog so to speak, everyone is always trying extra hard to knock them off. The Thunder team rarely gets rattled when things are not going their way instead they buckle down and go that much harder and faster. Sometimes they are beyond glistening with sweat as they are soaked through and through because they are on a mission and know to reach the goal they have in mind. They know that when they are not playing well they must keep playing, pushing and shoving. They always seem willing to push one more time to get a win and that is why they are where they are at. They also seem willing to persevere no matter the boos nor how rough the game gets. There are times they are not hitting their shots but they keep shooting and sooner or later they are usually back in the game if not on top of the game.
As Realtors we all have had dry spells where we keep making the phone calls, writing non-winning contracts just nothing seems to be going our way. The key to success is always good old nasty sweat and being stubborn enough not to ever back down or quit. I know for a fact that many of the award winners have often found themselves in tough spots. It is a place where they are getting more no’s than they are yes. It can be a place where we lose some Realtors because they just give up. Those Realtors that have the staying power to win know that the yes may be just around the corner or right at their fingertips. If they draw back they may well miss the yes that is there just ready to be grabbed. In this day and age most certainly we can have buyers and sellers that just flat wear us out. If we keep going though we will find some smoother paths. We have lenders who can come up with more ways to not close a deal than we ever dreamed of. We sometimes get hold of a contract that will have so many issues it will drive us over the wall. Remember this when you are at that stage. More often than not your smooth closings have been higher in numbers than your rough ones but it is often the rough ones that we focus our attention on.
I have seen the Thunder lose some games they should not have lost or at least I did not think so. Then a day or two later play a really tough team and beat them soundly. They brushed the loss off their shoulder like dandruff and went forward. That is what we all must always learn to do. Never let the disappointments of one day carry into the next. I heard an announcer at one of the games say Russell Westbrook was just like a pesky fly when he is on defense. He just will not leave someone alone until he takes the ball away from them and heads the other way. That is how you keep winning. You must learn to be the pesky fly that just will not go away. When the heat is on and you are wanting to score be the pesky fly then steal the ball and go get the two points.
Have a great week everyone. You are the best Realtors in Oklahoma!

Balance

Life can be difficult. Work can further complicate that.
My 10 year old son was frustrated last night and said to me, “Why do you have to work so much?” My response was the basic, “Well, if you want to do the things you get to do and go the places you want to go, your dad and I both need to work.” He seemed to understand but I must say, part of me struggled with my own explanation.
I truly LOVE what I do! But I also love my family. It is the challenge of life no matter what your job is, BALANCE. I have several great projects in progress, Post licensing school here in house for our newly licensed agents, search engine optimization plan on our new website soon to be released and our annual Easter Seals fundraising campaign.
So even though there are times when you may feel you are pulled different directions, be sure you are doing something you love. If you are passionate about your job, that makes the tough times a tad bit easier. Then when your job is done be sure to leave it at the door and enjoy your life. Balance is a challenge but is worth it!!!

Monday Morning Kickoff

Good morning everyone! I hope you are all having a fantastic week. Yes, I took a little break from the MMKO as life has been a little crazy the last few weeks.
Remember just a few years ago before we had the Hornets and now the Thunder. I personally did not pay much attention to NBA basketball and was really just not into it. But I have to ad-mit I have really been hooked on watching the games and going to the games. This year more so than previous years I have really come to appreciate the quality of the players we have on our team and how well they play as a team. We have what three main stars on the team but the way they assist each other it makes a whole bunch or starts. I was at the Thunder / Maver-icks game Monday night and I noticed how when Dirk for the Mavericks got a good one how he would put his arms up in the air at half court to say “Hey Look what I just did”. But with-out the guys who set the screens and passed him the ball where would Dirk be? Then I noticed how when KD slams one in what does he do? He takes off to play defense or how Westbrook handles himself when he swooshes a 3 pointer. Does he go to center court and put on a per-sonal show? No they don’t because they know that without the cooperation of the rest of the team, they would not be where they are at today. Which team won that game–the Thunder of course. Of course we just saw another come from behind victory Wednesday night. You might be asking yourself right now, what does an NBA team who plays really well as a team have to do with the selling of Real Estate?
First off each one of us is our own boss so to speak. But if one of us treats a customer poorly, does not communicate well, does not deliver on quality service, does not follow up on a lead, return phone calls promptly, do everything within our powers to get a listing sold then guess what? It makes the rest of the team look bad. Ultimately what each one of us does will impact how well the “Team ” performs. in the same token if we all give great service, respond to phone calls quickly, sell our properties timely then the team wins. When the team performs well it helps us to achieve our goals as a company and individually.
The game of basketball is really fairly simple, is it not? The goal is to get the ball, dribble the ball through the defense or competition, go down the court take the ball and throw it through the orange hoop. That is why they all the players get paid millions a year right? Because any-body can do it. I believe Wednesday night the Thunder had 3 players who got 30 or more points each. Now, to achieve that statistic means that you played some serious team ball. Each one of these players had the other players back so to speak. Being a Realtor on a great team of Realtors is the same way. We must always have each other’s back so that we can all achieve the goals that we all want. Stay tuned for next week as we discuss perspiration and persever-ance. That will be fun being sweaty and stubborn.
Have a great week. You are the best team of Realtor in Oklahoma! Dan
